Suicidal Angels: Sanctify the darkness

02/02/10  ||  Euthanatos

Suicidal angels that sanctify the darkness. That must be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Who comes up with cheesy shit like that? Good god, a ten year old could do better. You know what’s funny, though? “Sanctify the darkness” is a killer album. It’s a fucking punch to the crotch, it’s 100% 80’s thrash metal with a modern approach. And I, quiet frankly, dig the fuck out of that.

These Greeks came out of fucking nowhere and hit me with this brick of a thrash album. I can’t even remotely express how pleased I am to still be able to be surprised and excited by a new thrash band. Just when you think every mediocre bastard has jumped on the wagon and ruined a good thing for you, here come Suicidal Angels, with their stupid, stupid name and save the day.

Granted, the vocals might take a little getting used to (and the vocalist’s English is a little iffy), but that’s the only thing I’m not 100% sold on. The riffs on this album would make Mille Petrozza and Schmier weep. I’m telling you, this is professional stuff, inspired, aggressive like spitting in a baby’s face when it’s crying so it’ll just shut the fuck up or at least have good reason to be yelling.

“Bloodthirsty”, “The pestilence of saints”, the fucking brutal “Apokathilosis”, fuck, shit, cunt, this is some brilliant shit. It’s absolutely impossible to sit still while listening to this. Run around your living room, punch your mother’s forehead, scream your balls off, this is thrash metal meant for moshing. The band members also have nifty names and a song called “Child molester”, so you can’t really ask for much more.

A hefty improvement on their debut (which is itself an album worthy of your time), Suicidal Angels are one of those bands you’d never even hear about unless a friend of a friend came up to you and showed them, which is precisely how I got to know them. There’s a certain charm to that, reminiscent of the tape-trading days, but fuck, Suicidal Angels certainly deserve more of a place in the sun. The musicianship is fucking good and the songwriting is more inspired than what all, yes, I said ALL legendary thrash acts of the 80s are doing nowadays. Still, Nuclear Blast is releasing this fucker, so let’s hope they get some raves.

These young fellas have got it going on.

The cover: It’s death. Holding an hourglass. As if naming yourselves Suicidal Angels wasn’t bad enough. Christ.
